adventure travel can be challenging
A recent Smithsonian blog post featured a list of gifts for adventure travelers. The list included:
- Bear Spray
- Seawater desalinator
- Wild Edibles Foraging Guide
- Emergency Rations
- Weather-proof Fire-starter
This was just another article that drove home the difference between active travel and adventure travel.
None of those items would be on my list of holiday gifts for the avid active traveler. The active travel gift list would include:
So did you notice the big difference between adventure travel gear and active travel gear? Okay, you may have noticed a few differences, but one of the big ones: Most of the items on the active travel list could be used on a regular basis in your everyday life. At least, if you’re a fairly active person, you will often have the need of a smart phone, bike accessories, outdoor clothing, & emergency lighting. However, I don’t personally have a daily need for emergency fire-starters or edibles foraging guides.
I know there are a lot of folks who see active travel & adventure travel as being synonymous, but I don’t see it that way, and this blog-post points to some of the differences.
